VC Says "Over 40% Of UNIZIK Awka Staff Watch Pornography At Work". How He Caught Them

The vice-chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, on Thursday said over 40 percent of the staff of the university watch pornography at work.

The VC who was able to monitor the development in offices on campus from his own network, said he took a drastic decision to curb it by censoring Internet services in the university from his office.
Ahaneku said: “This is one reason we shut down YouTube from the university’s resource centre.

“People should be made to be conscientious as well as do what they have been assigned to do and eschew indolence.

“There have been a lot of abuses on facilities that, ordinarily, should aid staff in their jobs and as a result plans are underway to remove the televisions in central offices."

Ahaneku added, “Spending government time without doing what one is paid for is an act of corruption.”

ASUP Suspends Nationwide Strike Action

Chairman of the ASUP told a press conference in Bauchi that the decision to suspend the strike came at the group’s 14 conference in Bauchi after it reached an agreement and signed a memorandum of settlement and action.

The union has previously met with officials and ministries of education and labour, alongside the National Salaries and Wages Commission, Budget office of the federation, office of Head of Civil service and office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“While we are not unaware of the government over the years to willfully renege on agreements of this nature with labour unions including ours, it is the considered view of our union that the contents of this MoS be given a chance of implementation particularly as there is a mechanism for monitoring and evaluation embedded in the MoS.

“Our union’s congress have been fully briefed on these developments and I am therefore to communicate the decision of our union to suspend the 15 days old strike action of our union effective Wednesday, 28th November,2017,” he said.

“In arriving at this decision, our union considered the impact of the strike action on the society including parents and students, pleas on the union by well meaning Nigerians and other stakeholder groups in the sector.

“We want to assure Nigerian public that our struggle shall continue to be focused on the survival of this vital sector and in the same vein express our gratitude to all well meaning Nigerians including members of the media and our members for the support and understanding during this period,” the union added.

Bayelsa Convention: NANS Consoles Family Of Slain Student

The National Association of
Nigerian Students (NANS) has
condoled with the family of Mr
Elvis Magam, a 300 level
student of the University of
Uyo (UniUyo), Akwa-Ibom state
who died at the association’s
Zone B convention.

A statement by NANS President,
Mr Chinonso Obasi, on Tuesday
in Abuja that Magam was shot
dead by suspected cultists at
the Federal University, Otu-Oke,
Bayelsa State.

Chinonso Obasi, NANS
President
He commended the Bayelsa
Police Command and the
Department of State Services
for their swift response and
arrest of suspects, adding that
the culprits should be
prosecuted accordingly.

Obasi said that the opening
ceremony of the convention
witnessed clashes among
contending aspirants over who
would represent the state at
the Zonal leadership of NANS.

“It is unfortunate that some
misguided youths parading as
students were drafted in by
some aspirants to frustrate the
efforts of the organisers.

“The national leadership of
NANS salutes the promptness
with which the security
agencies apprehended some
suspects and clearly wish to
state that the association is
interested in the arrest,
investigation and prosecution
of all those involved including
their sponsors.

“It is crude, inhuman and
unfathomable that young
people now resort to arms
possession and usage in clearly
a student’s election,’’ he said.
According to Obasi, NANS’
disapproval of such
desperation is evident in its
numerous efforts at sensitising
and preaching peace.
He said that NANS’ leadership
would assist the security
agencies in their ongoing
investigation in order to
ensure that Magam’s family got
justice.
The NANS president called on
students who participated at
the convention to assist the
security agencies in fishing out
all those involved in the
mindless killing of a fellow
student.
Mr Asuquo Amba, the
Commissioner of Police in
Bayelsa, on Monday confirmed
the incident, adding that some
arrests had been made.
