Former President Olusegun Obasanjob As Been Announced As The Chairman Of LASU 22nd Convocation Lecture
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is to chair the 22nd Convocation Lecture of the Lagos State University (LASU) as the institution plans students’ graduation for May 23 and May 24.
The university’s Spokesman, Mr Adekoya Martins, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.Martins said that arrangements for 2016/2017 Convocation were in top gear.
He said that Obasanjo would be the Chairman of the Convocation Lecture to be delivered on May 22 by Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission.
According to the spokesman, the lecture is entitled: “Role of Education in Promoting Social Cohesion and Peace: Opportunities and Challenges for Nigeria”.He noted that LASU held convocations in March, saying that the 2018 edition was rescheduled due a nationwide strike by non-academic university workers.
NAN reports that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the National Association Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) embarked on an indefinite strike on December 4, 2017 under the aegis of Joint Action Committee (JAC).
The union blamed the strike on government’s non-implementation of some parts of an agreement it had with JAC on Sept. 20, 2017.
Following understanding JAC had with agreement the government, the workers, however, suspended the strike on March 15.
Martins told NAN that activities heralding the convocation would begin on May 17.He told NAN that the convocation cup competition for staff would take place on May 17, Jumat service, May 18 and a special thanksgiving service, May 20.
There will be Coconut Breaking Festival and command performance on May 21, according to Martins.The official told NAN that award of first degrees in all faculties would take place on May 23 while higher degrees and honorary doctorate degrees would be awarded on May 24.

Press Statement By WAEC on Arrest and Parade of WASSCE Question and Answer Syndicate by the Lagos State Police Command
Press Statement By WAEC on Arrest and Parade of WASSCE Question and Answer Syndicate …
Press Release
THE WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL
Private Mail Bag No 1022, Yaba, Lagos
Arrest and Parade of WASSCE Question and Answer Syndicate by the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police.
The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has been drawn to various publications in the media on the arrest and parade of some individuals belonging to the WASSCE question and answer syndicate by the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police.
The Council wishes to highly commend the efforts of the Security Agencies, particularly, the Nigeria Police which have been collaborating with it in the fight against examination malpractice. In particular, the Council wishes to commend the Inspector General of Police for directing the IGP Monitoring Team which have been collaborating with the Council in the past two years. This collaboration with the IGP Monitoring Team resulted with the arrest of some individuals connected with the Syndicate in different locations around the country early last year. The individuals were paraded at the Force Headquarters, Abuja and subsequently charged to court.
The Council hopes that this collaboration will continue so as to checkmate the nefarious activities of these unscrupulous individuals.
However, the Council would like to emphasize that the question papers for the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates , 2018 did not leak as has been erroneously portrayed in the media.
Leakage can be said to have occurred when the question papers gets into hands of individuals who are not supposed to have them before the time scheduled on the timetable. Without any iota of doubt the Council wishes to state that no case of leakage has been established since the beginning of the examination.
See also: Police Arrested Pastor Operating Fake WAEC Centre .
Our monitoring and investigations of the ongoing examination have established the fact that certain School Principals, Invigilators, Supervisors and Candidates who had succeeded in smuggling mobile phones and other electronic devices into the examination hall, snap the question papers after the examination must have commenced and forward to their criminal collaborators who in turn provide solutions to the questions and send to their subscribers via rogue websites, sms, WhatsApp and other social media.
In addition, in several cases during our monitoring and investigations, it was discovered that question papers of previous examinations were photoshopped by this despicable elements to scam gullible candidates who patronize their rogue websites and WhatsApp platforms.
Therefore, we took the following measures to ensure that the question papers do not find their way out of the examination hall and that solutions do not get to the subscribing candidates in the examination hall:
Thorough searching of the candidates before entering the examination hall;
Banning of Supervisors and Invigilators from taking their mobile phones and other electronic devices into the examination hall;
Briefing of School Principals on their vicarious liability should any of their candidates be caught with mobile phones or other electronic devices in the examination hall;
Cancellation of Entire Results of candidates that brought mobile phones and other electronic devices into the examination hall.
An effective solution to the menace of rogue websites can either be the jamming of mobile networks within a specified radius in and around the examination halls or the shutting down of the internet throughout the country during the period of the examination as has been done in some countries but those are beyond the powers of the Council.
It is worthy of note that the Council has the capability and capacity to detect and punish candidates who must have benefited from the fraudulent activities of the operators of rogue websites and WhatsApp platforms.
Furthermore, the Council is willing to collaborate with well meaning Nigerians, Civil Society Groups, Corporate Organisations that are ICT inclined, Telecom Companies, States Ministries of Education, Deposit Money Banks, relevant Security Agencies, the Media and other stakeholders to neutralize the threat being posed by examination malpractice to education in Nigeria.
Once again, the Council wishes to reiterate that the integrity of the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates, 2018 has not been compromised as no single case of leakage or foreknowledge has been established.
We want to assure the general public that the activities of the rogue websites and fraudulent WhatsApp platforms that peddle solved answers for a fee would not affect the integrity of the ongoing examination.

According to Benson, the victim's uncle, Lilian was attacked late yesterday, while returning from his place. He said Lilian met her classmate on the way and she insisted that she must join her cult group, her persistent refusal provoked the suspect and she vowed to disfigure Lillian's face. .
Consequently, the two classmates started fighting, and then the suspect alerted her gang members, who came along and had the victim held to the ground, stabbed her right eye and then took off. .
