Benue killings: Over 10, 000 children forced out of school

The Benue State Universal Education Board (SUBEB), has disclosed that over 10, 000 pupils have been forced out of schools in two Local Government Areas of the state which came under attack by gunmen on New Year’s Day.

The Chairman of SUBEB, Rev Philip Tachin, on Sunday told newsmen in Makurdi that schools were affected as many families fled their homes alongside children to take refuge in different camps following the invasion of Guma and Logo LGAs of the state by gunmen.

Tachin also lamented that the move had become a serious setback to the board which recently embarked on massive campaign for increased enrolment of pupils into public primary schools in the state at the commencement of new academic session few months ago.

According to him, it was disheartening to see hundreds of school children forced out of school by the invasion of suspected herders on some communities in Guma and Logo area.

He made the observation when he paid a visit to the camp few days ago to donate relief materials.

“The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) gave me a staggering statistic of children numbering 2,050 who are locked up in this camp in Gbajimba.

Apart from these children from the rural areas that have been camped here, the primary school in Gbajimba has also been shut down in order to accommodate the refugees since there are no enough IDPs camps.

“This is the multiplier effect of this genocidal operation. There are six IDPs camps in these two affected local governments and if the statistics of these school children are the same across the IDPs camps, over 10,000 children have been forced out of school,” he said.

Tachin also worried that the gunmen who apparently have no value for education were on a mission to destroy education.

He added that, if the Federal Government cannot be decisive in putting a stop to the unethical manner of dehumanizing human beings, then its efforts in education was a mere waste of resources.

“Many schools have been affected though we are yet to ascertain whether school buildings have been destroyed the same way they do to houses in villages.

We met one of the cops that were attacked by the armed herdsmen and he confirmed that they were Fulani herdsmen.

“They were heavily armed and were among their cattle. The federal government should be honest by not playin politics with this serious security problem because it is capable of conflagration.

We want one Nigeria and we shouldn’t be pushed to a divided country,” Tachin concluded.

BREAKING: TENSION RAISES AS1 OF NIGERIAN INSTITUTIONS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE JAN 25 ADMISSION DEADLINE

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that one percent of the nation’s tertiary institutions did not meet the deadline issued to them by the exam body. JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin said while 99 percent of the nation’s tertiary institutions were able to comply with its January 25 deadline, some others which he said, were in the one percent bracket, could not meet up.

He, however, could not give the names of those that complied as well as institutions that couldn’t meet up just as he did not disclose whether any sanction await the institutions that failed to meet up with the deadline. “So far, we have received 99 percent compliance from tertiary institutions.

One percent of the tertiary institutions were unable to meet up”, he said. Recall that the board, on Thursday last week, directed all tertiary institutions to end their 2017 admission by January 25.

Dr Benjamin, who conveyed the position of the tertiary institutions admission examination body to the institutions during interview with journalists in Abuja, said the board’s decision came after a meeting where all issues and ones bordering on the admission process were taken into consideration.

He said it was resolved that the academic calendar must be adhered to. According to him, the directive became necessary as the board intended to meet up with the academic calendar as earlier agreed.

“By implication, candidates who have gained admissions into various institutions and are yet to register or do no have admissions by January 25 should begin to make preparations for the 2018 UTME, “he had said.

Benue State government closes 2, schools over poor standards

The Benue State Government has closed down 2, 219 secondary schools over poor standards.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dannis Ityavyar, made this disclosure on Tuesday in Makurdi, the state capital while fielding questions from members of the House of Assembly, who sought explanations over the dwindling standard of education.

Ityavyar also added that 19 tertiary institutions were closed down for the same reason.

He said that the state government was working toward improving the quality of education, declaring that mushroom schools would not be allowed to operate.

“The only powers we have are limited to quality control; the owners of schools insist that we cannot dictate fee to them and there isn’t much that we can do,” he said.

He confirmed that some schools were charging N30,000 to register their students for West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) senior secondary schools examination as against the N13,500 charged by the examination body.“It is a difficult situation because the parents are willing to pay.

In the ministry, we are helpless,” he said.

5 Materials Candidates Are Banned From Using During The 2018 UTME Examination

JAMB has banned 2018 UTME candidates from coming to the exam hall with some items. If you are writing this exam, don't go to exam hall with these five things
The 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is around the corner, and as part of efforts to curb malpractice in the examination, JAMB has set new strategies in place.

According to JAMB, CCTV cameras and electronic jammers will be installed across all CBT centres in the country to deactivate mobile networks.

JAMB has also announced that all lens detectors will also be made available in all centres to check all eyeglasses.

Due to these new strategies, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has banned and warned candidates from coming to centres with these items.

1. Wristwatches.
JAMB says it has discovered that during the conduct of the 2017 UTME, electronic devices including wristwatches and other devices were used to perpetrate examination malpractice.

3. Spectacles
Any candidates going for the 2018 UTME is not expected to wear spectacles as JAMB listed eyeglasses as part of the banned items.
This according to JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede is the reason the exam body install lens detector in all CBT centres.

He said, “the lens detectors will also be made available at all centres to find out the status of all eyeglasses if a candidate or anyone must go in with it.

4. Mobile phone
Your mobile phone too is not allowed to be taken to the CBT centres. According to JAMB, your phones will be deactivated if you bring it to the exam hall.

To all the CBT centres, the rule this year is that electronic jammers will be installed across all the centres to deactivate all mobile phone networks because we have seen what many of them have done with phones and other electronic tools''

5. Calculators
Just like other electronic devices, JAMB has banned the use of calculators in the UTME exam hall.

Things You May Not Know About University of Ibadan... Number One will Shock You

This is a list of very interesting and unknown details about the premier university in Nigeria, U.I which is located in the South-western part of the country.

University of Ibadan, Oyo State

1. University of Ibadan Started as Yaba College, Lagos
The University of Ibadan has her origins in Yaba College (now YabaTech), founded in 1932 in Yaba, Lagos. The Yaba College is the first tertiary educational institute in Nigeria. Yaba College was transferred to Ibadan in 1948. That was when it became the University College of Ibadan. This is the name some of our fathers and grandfathers still call the University of Ibadan till today.

2. UI was founded on its own site in 1948
The University of Ibadan was founded on its own site on 17 November 1948. In late 1963, on the university playing-fields, the Rt. Hon. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria, became the first Chancellor of its independent university. In that year, all remaining ties with the University of London were severed.

On November 17, 1948. Arthur Creech Jones, then the British Secretary of State for the Colonies, led the inauguration ceremony of the institution. The university was originally created as an extension of the University of London and was called University College, Ibadan.

3. UI, the only University founded before Nigeria’s Independence
The University of Ibadan, founded in 1948, is the oldest university in Nigeria and the only institution founded before the country became independent in 1960. The University of Ibadan is a federally- controlled public university located in Ibadan, Oyo State. Other big and popular Universities such asUniversity of Lagos (1962), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1962), University of Benin (1970), University of Port Harcourt (1975), were only established after independence. Now you know, the only true University founded in Nigeria before 1960 is the University of Ibadan.

4. The first Indigenous Vice chancellor of UI was Kenneth Dike

The first Nigerian vice chancellor of the university was Kenneth Dike, after whom the University of Ibadan’s library is named. He is the first indigenous VC of the University. Kenneth Onwika Dike (17 December 1917 – 26 October 1983) was a Nigerian historian. He was a native of Awka, in the eastern Nigeria.

During the Nigerian civil war, he moved to Harvard University, Boston. He was a founder of the Ibadan School that dominated the writing of the History of Nigeria until the 1970s. He is credited with “having played the leading role in creating a generation of African historians who could interpret their own history without being influenced by Eurocentric approaches.

5. Designs of halls of residence are not identical

Did you know that the designs of the halls of residence in the University of Ibadan are not identical? And, just so you know, this is deliberate. Mellanby, Tedder, Kuti, Sultan Bello and Queen Elizabeth II halls – were designed by Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew.
Messrs Watkins Gray and Partners designed Alexander Brown Hall as a part of the overall design of the University College Hospital Complex. Independence and Nnamdi Azikiwe Halls, were designed by Messrs Design Group (Nigeria) Ltd. Obafemi Awolowo Hall was designed by Allied Group of Architects, while Tafawa Balewa and Idia Halls were designed by Messrs Aderele-Omisore- Adebanjo Associates. The Federal Ministry of Works designed the Abdusalami Abubakar Hall.

6. These notable Nigerians attended University of Ibadan
a. Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart
b. Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General
c. Michael Omolewa, former President of UNESCO General Conference and Ambassador of Nigeria to UNESCO
d. Kayode Fayemi, Governor of Ekiti State
e. J. P. Clark, Nigerian poet and playwright
f. Wole Soyinka, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature
g. Grace Alele-Williams, first Nigerian woman to become the head (vice-chancellor) of a Nigerian university, the University of Benin
h. William Kumuyi, Founder and General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry
i. Ken Saro-Wiwa, Nigerian writer, television producer and environmental activist
j. Farida Mzamber Waziri, Former Executive Chairperson of the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

7. University of Ibadan has no catchment area

UI is one of the Federal universities with no catchment areas.
Other Universites with no catchment areas are the 3 federal agriculture universities (Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta; Federal University Agriculture Makurdi; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike,Umuahia, Abia State), University of Abuja (UNIABUJA),University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT), Federal University of Petroleum

What Issues Are You Facing With 2018 JAMB Registration?

The expected deadline for the 2018 UTME registration is February 6th, 2018. That's barely two weeks from now. We are not sure at the moment if the deadline will be extended. Candidates who intend to register for 2018 UTME are therefore advised to make sure they do so before the stated deadline.

Be that as it may, we are equally aware of the fact that certain issues and problems may surface during the registration which may hinder the smooth and successful registration of some candidates.

Well, if you are one of the candidates who have registered but made one two mistakes that need to be corrected or if you are among those that due to one issue or the other have been unable to successfully complete your registrations, this thread is a solution platform for you.

Use the comment box to point out whatever issue you are facing with the 2018 UTME registration. Solutionclassians who have solutions to the problems will give their responses on the issues. An Admin will equally intervene where needed.

However, we enjoin all who will be proffering solutions to issues here to ensure they have an honest solution to the problem to avoid misleading others.

This is not an avenue to ask questions about subject combination and courses offered in schools. If you need to check that out, consult the JAMB Brochure or checkout an earlier thread on UTME/O'level Subject Combinations.

The 1000 points will cover every topic in Jamb Physics. However, the key points will not be arranged topic by topic. As time goes on, I will work on hot key point series on Jamb Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, CRS and the Use of English. It will be wise you follow up series. Now, lets go straight to business…..

Key Points on Jamb Physics hot topics (1 to 10)

1) The classification of Wave are:

Mechanical Wave (E.g Water and Sound Wave)
Electromagnetic Wave (E.g Gamma and X-Rays)
Progressive/Travelling Wave (Water And Sound)
Stationary/Standing Wave (Nodes And Antinodes)
Longitudinal Wave (E.g Sound Waves)
Transverse Wave (E.g Waves in Pipe and Strings).

2) Stationary Wave occur when two interfering waves of the same amplitude and frequency travel in opposite direction.

3) Velocity of Sound In:

Air is 332m/s
Water (Liquid) is 1435m/s
Iron (Solid) is 5000m/s

4) The velocity of Echo is equal to the total distance traveled by the sound divided by the time taken.

5) The quality of sound depends on the number of overtones or harmonics. It makes it possible to distinguish between two instruments playing the same note.

6) Vibration can either be free, forced or resonance.

7) Eclipse occurs due to the travel of light in a straight line.

8) The application of plane mirrors are Periscope, Kaleidoscope and Sextant.

9) Refraction occurs at constant frequency.

It is true that you will have one or more difficult courses and topics. You are not alone. Others have their weakness as well. However, you do not have to avoid the difficult areas.

Do everything you can to understand the topics that challenge you the most. Even if it takes meeting your tutors or fellow candidates for help, do it.
The area you did not read must surely come in the exam. The reason why so many candidates fail waec Mathematics is because they avoid particular topics/subjects as a result of their phobia.

4. Study Along With Past Questions:
Like I always tell my Jamb students, past questions are the prophecies of future questions. Waec doesn’t have new questions to set. They repeat old questions with simple tweak. However, do not cram past questions. Doing so will harm you.
The more waec past questions you study, the better prepared you are. The waec past questions gives you the exact format in which the examination questions usually come.
The English usually carry comprehension passages and summary. It is your ability to analyze the passages that will help you out.

To answer waec mathematics questions, you need to fall in love with mathematics.
Read: How to make mathematics your best subject

5. Test yourself:
To pass waec 2018 without expo, set questions for yourself once in a while. This will help you build confidence and overcome unnecessary fear.
Make sure you know the correct answer to any question you fail. With this, you will surely pass waec 2018 without runs.

2017 Admission: Over 600,000 Students In Limbo As JAMB Insists On Eligibility

Information have emerged that about 50 per cent of the 1.2 million candidates that met the Joint Board Matriculation Board (JAMB) cut-off mark have been given admission to their various university of choice with the remaining 50 per cent still unsure of their status.

The implications are that about 600,000 prospective university students are currently frustrated and unable to access their admission after being offered one by their respective institutions of choice.
Akelicious findings revealed that both the affected schools and candidates are blaming JAMB for the stalemate in the admission processes.

According to some of the university officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, “The JAMB action to appropriate admission processes is frustrating to both the students and the schools.

“Do you know that most of the students are yet to access their admission in the JAMB portal?”

They alleged that the newly introduced Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) by the Board has stalled admission of many students “who can’t access the portal, leaving them stranded with deadline for admission having elapsed last week.”

But while speaking to us, Head of Media and Public Relations for JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, debunked such claims, saying they are misleading and borne out of ignorance of the admission processes.

Benjamin clarified that while they helped to facilitate examinations for candidates and ensured that standards were applied across board, it is actually the universities that propose admissions to candidates who must have passed both the JAMB and Post-UTME.

He said: “A candidate writes JAMB and if he meets the cut-off mark and sent to their university of choice, the institutions conduct the post-UTME and the admission officer computes the results and forwards the successful candidates to the Vice Chancellor who in turn proposes these candidates for admission.

“The JAMB will now screen these candidates to ensure they have the standard criteria and are qualified for admission. So we will approve depending on whether the candidates are eligible, and all they need to do is accept their admission at the portal which is accessible contrary to what you heard.

“Some institutions have unloaded but the heads of such institutions have not approved. It’s not from our end. The CAPS is managed by us but institutions and JAMB interface on it.”

On CAPS, Benjamin said the system was created to facilitate a central admission process to ensure uniformity and enforce standard.

He stressed that most of the candidates complaining about the situation did not care to find out if they meet the eligibility requirements like the possession of the necessary O’Levels, A’Levels among others.

Benjamin noted that based on eligibility criteria, over 80 percent of the candidates have processed their admission.
According to him, “About 1.7 million candidates sat for the last JAMB out of which 1.2 million passed with 600,000 (which is 50 percent) eligible for admission. I can tell you that out of that number, we have successfully processed the eligible candidates with 80 per cent accepting their admission at the portal so far.”

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ish’aq Oloyede, had in September 2007 at the training and sensitisation Forum CAPS in Abuja, estimated that about 50 per cent of admission in the country’s tertiary institutions prior to 2016 were done through illegitimate means, promising to put a stop to it post-2016.

He said: “We have a situation; for example, if universities admit one million students, about 500,000 are done illegally.

We do not yet have accurate data but we will regularise all the irregular admissions up to 2016. However, as from 2016 onwards, we cannot regularise anybody who got admitted through irregular means.”

Oloyede had clarified that contrary to public perception, JAMB is just a ranking and not an examination body like WAEC or NECO.

He said: “It is a screening body to rank already qualified students. It is not UTME that qualifies a person for admission but O’ Level. What JAMB does is just to rank presumably qualified person as pass or fail is not the focus of any ranking body.”

FUTO Shutdown As Non-Academic Staff Begin Strike

Academic and other official activities were yesterday grounded at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) by protesting members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU).

The aggrieved workers, under the auspices of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Scientists (NAATS), said they were following the directive of the national body.

Chairman of JAC Comrade Ibeji Nwokeoma said: “The Federal Government gave N23 billion for the payment of earned allowance to all workers of Federal Universities, unfortunately, the money was hijacked by our sister union and they shared it as their spirit moved them, giving over N18 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) alone, leaving a little above N4 billion for three independent staff unions. ASUU hijacked the money at the national level in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education.
“We felt it was wrong and we asked the Federal Government what the sharing formula was, why they could give one union over N18 billion out of the N23 billion. We also want to know the yardstick for the sharing, whether population or the nature of work they do in the university, but till now, the Federal Government has answered us.

“So we are demanding that if what they gave is academic earned allowance as they called it, the government should give us our own fair share of the largesse. They should also give the Non-Academic Staff their own earned allowance because we all work in the university.
“We have been peaceful all these while about the strike but the government has been recalcitrant and that is why we adopted the measure to draw the public’s attention to prevail on the Federal Government to address the issue so that our students will not suffer”.

SSANU Chairman, Comrade Franklin Matheus, said: “We want to inform the public through this action that we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government on issues including shortfall in workers’ salaries, earned allowances and Staff School emoluments, but none has been implemented. We agreed that these earned allowances will be paid before the end of last year, but what the government did was to give ASUU N23 billion and a paltry N4 billion to all the non-academic staff unions. So if the Federal Government can pay N23 billion to ASSU as earned academic allowance, we are demanding N66 billion as our earned allowances.

“We want the government to obey the judgment of the Industrial Court. We can only end this strike if the government addresses the skewed allowance and pay us N66 billion which is the earned allowance for non-academic staffs.”

UNIABUJA NASU Vows To Continue Strike

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Abuja Chapter has vowed not to suspend the ongoing strike action until their demands are met. Recall that the Union embarked on a nationwide strike on December 4th, 2017 over federal government failure to implement the 2009 agreement and since then are yet to resolve the issue. The branch chairman of NASU, University of Abuja, Mr Yakubu Simon said in Abuja yesterday said, the refusal of government in paying the allowances agreed upon, especially, the earn allowance is the most pressing issue that prompted the strike. Simon said the Union has some percentage that is left with the government. “Earlier on they said 28 per cent so when they send in N23 billion to invest in state target of ASUU academic earn allowance which is not supposed to be so, the payment did not favour us. “All of us submitted our competition on this earns allowance and in the course they went and give the payment in favour of ASUU, that is why our national called that we should embark on immediate and indefinite strike after communicating the federal government. “So our strike is still on, last week we had meeting in town and they briefed us how far they have gone with the federal government.”

Federal University Dutsinma recal 250 sacked staff

The Federal University, Dutsinma, Katsina State, has called back 250 staff sacked by the former management of the institution.

This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Armaya’u Bichi at a pre-convocation press briefing on Friday in Dutsinma.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the institution’s management had sacked staff whose temporary appointments were not regularized.

Bichi said that the institution had settled the arrears of the affected staff to boost their morale and ensure effective service.

“The staff were sacked unjustifiably by the former management, we realized that the decision is unjustifiably,’’ he said.

He added that the management had employed 250 academic staff and over 200 non-academic staff to enhance academic activities in the university.

Bichi disclosed that the university had established a Freedom of Information Unit to ease access to information about the university as well as an Anti-Corruption Unit to support Federal Government fight against corruption.

The VC said that the National Universities Commission, NCC, has approved the establishment of Faculties of Law and Engineering in the institution as well as the running of 12 Post Graduate courses.

He also disclosed that the university is offering free medical services to members of its host communities and distributed computers to secondary schools, to strengthen their relationship.

Crisis rocks Ondo Poly as worker demand sack of Rector, CSO

Workers of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo in Ondo state, on Thursday asked Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to sack the Rector of the institution, Engr. Idowu Ologunagba and the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Amos Ifedayo over incompetence and dereliction of duty.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP, and the Non – Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, NASU in a peaceful protest at the school gate demanded that a panel of enquiry should be set u to investigate the activities of the Rector and the CSO.

But, the School mamanagement led by the Rector has announced the suspension of all union activities in the institution till further notice.

The workers who converged as early as 7am chanting solidarity songs, had placards with various inscriptions such as, “We are saying no to Ologunagba; No more Ologunagba and Amos; Akeredolu, save RUGIPO from total collapse; Ologunagba must go now; Enough of mal –administration.

The Union demanded the state government to set up a panel of enquiry to uncover the remote and immediate cause of the students protest last Monday where school property worth millions of naira were destroyed.

“We have directed our members to withdraw academic activities till further notice. We will not resume academic activities Until the Rector and the Chief Security officer,CSO, of the institution are sacked

“As we are speaking, the state government is still owing us four months salary for 2016 and another three months salary for 2017 aside other allowances
“The institution is bewildered with mal-administration,
we have a man who is not capable of running the affair of the polytechnic at the helm of leadership.

We deman his immediate sack” the Union leaders said.
