A woman in Thika Town was on Tuesday arrested over allegations of refusing to breastfeed her baby.
The 25-year-old woman identified as Faith Nyokabi is said to have given the husband an ultimatum, demanding he pays her Sh100,000 for her to breastfeed the baby.
Nyokabi is reported to have fled from her matrimonial home in Kiganjo estate over a week ago, leaving the four-month-old baby behind.
Her husband, Charles Kirii, who works as a casual labourer in Thika town, said he was informed by neighbours on August 1 that Nyokabi had left the baby in the house alone.Kirii said he tried to convince Nyokabi to return home but she claimed that her mother had taken her to a clinic where she was injected with a drug to dry out the milk, reports Citizen TV.
He later decided to seek help from the authorities, and reported the matter at the Thika children’s offices, before he was referred to Murang’a children’s office. Kiiri, 36, admitted to having domestic quarrels with his wife, which he said stem from his mother-in-law's constant demand for financial assistance.
According to Lina Mwangi, a children’s officer in Thika, Nyokabi will be charged with child neglect and denying the child protection and care contrary to the Children’s Act.
